Seledri sudah dikenal sejak sejarah awal Mesir, Yunani dan Romawi. Tanaman yang terlihat cantik jika ditanam dalam pot ini lebih dulu dimanfaatkan sebagai bumbu masakan. Daun seledri biasa dipakai untuk memperkaya cita rasa sajian atau kaldu. Sup kacang merah dan bubur ayam kurang lengkap rasanya jika tanpa taburan daun seledri di dalamnya.
Tanaman ini termasuk jenis sayuran yang ditanam guna keperluan pengobatan. Masyarakat pedesaan telah lama memanfaatkan seledri sebagai obat untuk menurunkan panas dengan cara mengoleskan tumbukan daun seledri ke kepala anak yang terserang demam. Air perasan seledri yang mempunyai sifat mendinginkan dipercaya dapat mendinginkan kepala. Berdasarkan pengalaman beberapa orang, air perasan daun seledri dapat sekaligus menyuburkan dan menghitamkan rambut serta tidak mempunyai efek samping.

Berdasarkan penelitian, tanaman ini mengandung :
1. Natrium yang berfungsi sebagai pelarut untuk melepaskan deposit kalsium yang menyangkut di ginjal dan sendi.
2. Magnesium yang berfungsi menghilangkan stres.
3. Protein, belerang, kalsium, besi, fosfor, vitamin A, B1 dan C.
4. Psoralen, zat kimia yang menghancurkan radikal bebas biang penyebab kanker.

Khasiat seledri dapat dinikmati dengan merebus sebatang seledri ukuran sedang dengan satu gelas air. Ramuan ini cukup diminum sekali sehari. Kegunaannya antara lain mengobati hipertensi, rematik, radang usus buntu, tifus, keracunan, batuk rejan, asma, gangguan prostat, dan demam.
Untuk penderita hipertensi, satu ons daun seledri bersama tangkainya ditumbuk sampai lembut lalu dituangi dengan beberapa sendok air matang lalu disaring dan diminumkan cukup sehari sekali. Setelah minum ramuan ini disarankan untuk beristirahat total selama dua jam.

Seledri juga dapat mengobati diare, diabetes, epilepsi, migrain, buang air kecil yang mengandung darah, mencegah stroke, memperbaiki fungsi hormon, dan membersihkan darah. Jus seledri yang berdaun besar berkhasiat meningkatkan kecerdasan, mengatasi herpes dan gondokan.
